Dr. Chris Carl Hale, associate professor in AIU’s English Language Teaching Practices Program, has published a chapter in the book “Conversation Analysis and Language Teacher Education,” edited by Olcay Sert and Hansun Waring and published by Springer. The title of his chapter is, “Conversation Analysis as ‘Critical Event’ in Teacher Reflective Practice.”

Abstract of the chapter and link

This chapter uses Transformative Learning Theory to explore how in-service teachers’ knowledge schemas changed as a result of being introduced to conversation analysis (CA) in their MA TESOL programs. The study will present the experiences of three graduates who continue to employ CA as a resource in their teacher-reflection practices and localized action research. Utilizing an inductive, narrative inquiry approach in which interview data is coded and analyzed, the stories of how CA has impacted (and continues to inform) these teachers will be explored. In particular, the analysis aims to examine three areas: How teachers engaged in reflective-practice prior to (and after) learning CA, the critical event that opened their eyes to the illustrative power of CA in the context of teacher reflection, and the impact CA has had on their teaching practices, including the pedagogical and curricular choices they make. These teachers’ stories illustrate not only how budding practitioners use CA in their teaching practices, but also how they draw on their knowledge of CA to define their professional identities.
